India has formally requested written assurances from Beijing that Indian nationals will not be “selectively targeted” while traveling to or transiting through China. The move comes amid rising geopolitical friction and concerns over the treatment of Indian travelers.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that India’s sovereignty, national interest, and the safety of its citizens remain non-negotiable priorities.
What Triggered the Exchange?
Reports emerged suggesting that some Indian travelers faced additional questioning, extended document checks, or selective detentions in China. Even though no major incident has been officially confirmed, India acted proactively to safeguard its citizens.
India’s Written Demand to China
According to MEA sources, New Delhi has:
- sought a formal written assurance that Indian nationals will not be singled out,
- demanded transparent procedures for travel and transit,
- warned that any discriminatory action will be viewed seriously.
India emphasized that selective scrutiny of its citizens would amount to a serious diplomatic concern.
China’s Response
China has denied any form of targeted action, claiming that all procedures are routine and uniformly applied. However, India has insisted on written clarity rather than verbal statements.
RI Analysis: A Sign of Larger Geopolitical Tensions
This development reflects:
- a widening trust deficit between India and China, especially after ongoing border stand-offs,
- growing global concern about travel security and selective enforcement,
- India’s increasingly assertive diplomatic posture,
- China’s sensitivity to international scrutiny.
MEA’s Core Message
India has reiterated that:
“Every Indian citizen must be safe abroad. National sovereignty and citizen security are India’s highest priorities.”
This marks a firm, rights-based diplomatic stance as India–China tensions continue to simmer.
